NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen freshman men's basketball player Devon Saddler, who enjoyed a record-setting week in leading the University of Delaware to a 1-1 week, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for Feb. 21.

Saddler, a freshman guard from Aberdeen, Md. who attended Aberdeen High School and Winchendon (Mass.) Prep, continued to back his campaign for Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year honors as he averaged 21.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in leading the Blue Hens (12-15 oveall/7-9 CAA) to a 1-1 week.
Delaware snapped a five-game losing streak with a 72-66 road win at Northeastern on Thursday before dropping a 95-86 road verdict to Metrol Atlantic Athletic Conference contender Rider in a BracketBuster Tournament game on Saturday.
For the week, Saddler converted 11 of 22 shots from the field, drained 7 of 12 three-pointers, went 14 of 21 from the foul line, and recorded 43 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, and three steals. He scored 16 points and pulled three rebunds in the win over Northeastern and poured in a career-high 27 points in the loss to Rider, connecting for six three-pointers and pulling eight rebounds.
Saddler's 27 points vs. Rider tied the Delaware freshman record set by Ken Luck vs. Rider on March 2, 1979 and he also upped his season scoring total to 352 points, setting a new school single-season freshman mark that was previously held by teammate Alphonso Dawson.
For his efforts, Saddler was also named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the third straight week and for the fourth time this season.
Delaware will look to close out the regular season on a high note this week as the Hens host Towson Thursday night for Senior Night on Feb. 23 before heading to Hofstra for the regular season finale Saturday at 2 p.m.
