NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware junior guard Devon Saddler, who put in three outstanding performances against top-notch opponents for the Blue Hen men's basketball team during the week, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending Nov. 26.
In addition to the Best of the Blue Hens award, Saddler was also named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week on Monday.
Saddler, a native of Aberdeen, Md., averaged 28.3 points last week while shooting 53.3 percent (32 of 60) from the field and 87.5 percent (14 of 16) from the free throw line. He also led the Blue Hens with seven three-pointers and 11 assists while playing 112 of a possible 120 minutes on the week.
Saddler tied his career-high by scoring 32 points during Wednesday’s 66-63 loss to Kansas State, including 12 of Delaware’s final 14 points of the contest as the Blue Hens’ comeback effort fell just short. He finished 12 of 22 from the field including 3 of 5 from three-point range, while grabbing five rebounds and four assists.
Saddler again led all scorers during Friday’s 85-59 setback to Pitt at Madison Square Garden, finishing with 28 points on the afternoon. He went 10 of 20 from the field, hit all six of his free throw attempts, and again collected five boards versus the Panthers. For his efforts, he was named to the Pre-Season NIT All-Tournament Team.
Saddler capped his week with a 25-point effort during the narrow 80-75 loss at Temple on Sunday, finishing 10 of 18 from the floor and 3 of 3 from the foul line. Saddler and Jamelle Hagins combined to score 30 consecutive Blue Hen points during a 14-minute span in the second half.
Saddler currently ranks 13th in Division I with 22.2 points per game, and leads the CAA in scoring by more than four points per contest. He currently ranks 22nd in Delaware history with 1,147 career points.
Saddler and the Blue Hens will look to snap their three-game losing streak on Wednesday when they travel to Lafayette for a 7 p.m. tip-off with the Leopards.
