Athlete of the Week: Devon Saddler (Men's Basketball)

NEWARK, Del. -- For the second time this season, University of Delaware men's basketball standout sophomore Devon Saddler is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week. Saddler, who led the Blue Hens to a 1-1 week with a home victory over La Salle and a road setback at Howard, was honored for the period ending Dec. 26.

Saddler, a 6-2 guard from Aberdeen, Md. and a criminal justice major, was also honored back on Nov. 28 and earns the award for the third time in his two-year career with the Blue Hens.

During a 1-1 week for the Blue Hens, Saddler played 82 of a possible 85 minutes, hit 11 of 31 shots from the field (.354) and 9 of 14 free throws (64.2 percent) to finish with 32 points, averaging 16.0 points per game on the week. He also pulled 15 rebounds (7.5 avg.), dished out five assists, made one steal, and blocked one shot.

In a big 70-66 upset win over La Salle on Dec. 19 at the Bob Carpenter Center, Saddler finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Blue Hens to the victory. He also hit a three-pointer, dished out an assist, blocked one shot, and made a steal.

In the Hens' second game of the week, Saddler scored 14 points, pulled five rebounds, and dished out two assists but it wasn't enough as Delaware dropped an 88-83 overtime decision at Howard University in Washington, DC.

Delaware (5-5) will take a week off for final exams and will return to action Dec. 30 when the Blue Hens host perennial Top 25 contender Temple University at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
