NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware men's swimming standout Zach Schiavo, who led the Blue Hens to a key dual meet victory over Colonial Athletic Association foe Towson University on Saturday, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for Jan. 10.
Schiavo, a biochemistry and biology major from Mt. Laurel, N.J. (Bishop Eustace High School), played a big part in the victory as Delaware improved to 7-1 overall (4-1 vs. CAA opponents) with the 218-66 victory at Burdick Pool.
The Blue Hen men swept eight events, in addition to the 200-yard medley relay in which they took the top three times, but only two count for points. They took the top three podium position in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 500-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard butterfly. The win helped head coach John Hayman reach the 300 win plateau with a combined record between his men’s and women’s team.
Schiavo paced the Blue Hens with three first place finishes on the day. The team ended the meet winning 14 of 16 events. Schiavo started the Blue Hens off on the right foot with the first event of the day in the 200-yard medley relay. He was the anchor of the winning team in 1:33.35. He then posted first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (21.48) and the 100-yard freestyle (47.38).
For his efforts, Schiavo was also named the Colonial Athletic Association Male Swimmer of the Week.
The Blue Hens return to action next Saturday, January 15, as they travel to Drexel for a CAA battle starting at noon in Philadelphia.
