Tory Sharpless (Field Hockey)

NEWARK, Del. -- Junior forward Tory Sharpless, who scored a goal in both games for the University of Delaware field hockey squad during a 1-1 week, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for Sept. 6.

Sharpless, a human development major at Delaware with a minor in leadership, scored a goal as Delaware battled No. 15 ranked Duke tough in a 5-2 loss on Saturday and added another as the Hens stormed past Villanova for a 5-0 victory on Sunday. Both games were played at home at Rullo Stadium.
The Hens are now 3-1 this season under first-year head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof and have scored 18 goals overall and at least four in all but one game. Delaware will continue play this week when they take on national power and No. 2 ranked North Carolina on Friday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. at Rullo.
A native of West Windsor, N.J. (West Windsor Plainsboro South High School), Sharpless now leads the team with four goals this season as she also netted two scores in the season-opening 7-1 victory over Bryant.
She played in 14 games with eight starts a year ago as a sophomore for the Blue Hens and saw action in eight games with one start as a freshman in 2009 when she helped led Delaware to the Colonial Athletic Association title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The daughter of Rod and Linda Sharpless, Tory has served as a member of the UD Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and has also been a H.E.N.S. Peer Mentor.
