NEWARK, Del. -- Senior Amanda Stacevicz, who used her arm and her bat to lead the University of Delaware softball squad to a successful 3-1 record during the week, including winning two games from Colonial Athletic Associatoni foe James Madison, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for Apr. 11.
She feels very accomplished and honored that she was chosen for this award. Stacevicz, a junior pitcher and utility player from Cedar Grove, N.J. (Mt. St. Dominic Academy) , was impressive as she helped the upstart Blue Hens win three out of four games on the week.
The Hens opened the week with a 5-4 win in eight innings over Saint Joseph's on Apr. 6 before taking two out of three at home against James Madison, losing the first game 5-4 but rallying back for wins of 4-3 and 5-4 over the weekend.
For the week, Stacevicz went 5 for 14 at the plate for a .357 batting average, scored three runs, knocked in two runs, and had a double. In the circle, she appeared in three games, allowing just nine hits in 12 innings, allowing three runs, and striking out four while earning the win in two games.
Stacevicz thrives on staying competitive at Delaware and scheduling opponents that will challenge her and her teammates.
“My best experience playing softball for the University of Delaware has been traveling and playing some great competition like North Carolina and Notre Dame that have helped our team get better," she said.
In the 5-4 win over Saint Joseph's, she went 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI and also pitched seven innings in relief to earn the win. She knocked in the winning run when her grounder to second base in the eighth inning was mishandled, bringing home the winning run.
Stacevicz currently ranks second on the team in both batting average (.295) and runs batted in (17) while leading the team in the circle with a record of 8-8 and an earned run average of 3.04.
An organizational and community leadership major at Delaware, Stacevicz worked in the human resources department at a hospital over the summer and serves as team representative to the UD Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) with teammate Michelle Grap.
She would like to use her degree to work with kids in the future, while maintaining involvement with the sport she loves.
“I would like to go back to school to get my master's degree in early childhood education and become the graduate assistant coach for the softball team.” said Stacevicz. "I wouldn't trade the experience I have had here for the world.”
Stacevicz hopes to pass on the lessons she has learned here at UD to her younger sister, Lisa, who plans to be playing softball for the Blue Hens in two years.
Delaware will continue action Apr. 13 when the Hens continue a six-game home stand with a doubleheader vs. Rider at the Delaware Softball Stadium. The first game will begin at 3 p.m.
