NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware senior goalkeeper Breanna Stemler, who led the Blue Hen women's soccer team to a pair of Colonial Athletic Association victories, including helping head coach Scott Grzenda notch his 200th career win, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for Oct. 3.
Stemler, a fitness management major at Delaware, posted 10 saves in a 3-0 shutout road victory over Northeastern on Thursday and followed with three saves in a 3-2 win over Hofstra on Sunday at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The win over Hofstra helped Delaware improve to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1 in CAA play as the Hens put themselves in the thick of the conference race. The victory over Hofstra also snapped a personal 11-game losing streak to the Pride and made a winner out of Grzenda, who posted his 200th career victory in his 22nd season at the helm.
“Being in my senior year, and never beating them until now is such an incredible feeling,” she said. “To have a huge win in conference against a team that holds a lot of credibility on our home field and giving Scott his 200th win is a day that I will never forget.”
A two-year letterwinner and second-year starter from Horsham, Pa. (Hatboro-Horsham High School), Stemler has started all 11 games this season, logging 963 minutes of action. She ranks among the CAA leaders in saves (40), save pct. (.769), and goals against average (1.12). She has also recorded three shutouts on the season.
Stemler earned the Best of the Blue Hens award for the second time in her career after also being honored on Oct. 25, 2010.
She said such a big win gives the team more self-assurance for the rest of the season.
“The girls knew going in how big of a game Hofstra would be, and to get a win, especially after just beating Northeastern a few days earlier gives us such a confidence boost,” Stemler said. “It’s our mindsets that if we work hard and play hard, we can beat any team in our conference.”
Delaware will continue CAA action this week with a pair of key games in the state of Virginia. The Hens travel to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion on Oct. 7 and follow with an Oct. 9 visit to Williamsburg, Va. and a battle with William & Mary.
