Athlete of the Week: Kim Stewart (Volleyball)

NEWARK, Del. -- Kim Stewart, who earned Most Outstanding Players honors in leading the University of Delaware volleyball squad to its second straight Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title Sunday evening, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for Nov. 21

Stewart, a senior outside hitter from Kentwood, Mich. (East Kentwood High School), was the catalyst for the Blue Hens' title run as was outstanding throughout the tournament, leading the Blue Hens (20-12) to a pair of comeback victories at Delaware's owns Viera Court at Carpenter Sports Building.

Delaware, which has now won two straight CAA Tournament titles and four in the last five seasons, will now await their first opponent in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The 64-team field will be announced Sunday, Nov. 27, at 6 p.m. on ESPNU TV.

An organizational and community leadership major at Delaware, Stewart led the Blue Hens to a 3-2 victory over No. 5 seed James Madison in the semifinals as Delaware fought back from two sets down to pick up the victory.

In the championship match against No. 6 seed Virginia Commonwealth, the Hens fell behind 2-1 before rallying to win the fourth game and leading from start to finish in the pivotal fifth game.

Stewart, a third-team All-CAA selection who earned all-conference honors three times during her career, recorded 21 kills and 14 digs in the win over James Madison and followed with an 11-kills, 20-dig performance in the championship game.

Delaware (20-12), which extended its winning streak to six matches, captured its second straight CAA title and the Blue Hens’ fourth in the last five years - joining championship teams in 2007, 2008, and 2010. Three of those victories have come in front of the home crowd at Viera Court.

“I am so proud of this team tonight. We stuck to the game plan, we were really aggressive serving, and we were able to stop VCU’s momentum going into the fifth set. We’ve been here before and that makes a big difference. And it helps to play before a packed house, the crowd was great again tonight.”

“This is such a great experience,” said Stewart following the title match. “We all played our hearts out tonight. I think this was all about who wanted it more. We needed to protect this house and we really fed off the energy of the crowd.”
