Athlete of the Week: Jimmy Yezzo (Baseball)

NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware baseball slugger Jimmy Yezzo, who enjoyed a torrid weekend at the plate as the Blue Hens advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title game, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending May 28.

The award is the final one of the 2011-12 athletics season as Blue Hens teams will take a summer break and resume competition in August.

Yezzo, a sophomore university studies major from Cherry Hill, N.J. (Bishop Eustace High School), earned the rare accomplishment of being named the tournament Most Outstanding Player despite not playing for the championship winning team.

The Blue Hens, who finished the season with a record of 31-27, entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and upended No. 6 Towson with an 8-7 comeback win in 12 innings in the opening round and followed with an 11-3 victory over No. 2 seed Hofstra in the second round.

Delaware fell to top-seed UNCW 3-2 in the winners bracket round but rallied back to down Hofstra 12-9 the same day to advance to the final day of competition. During the final day, the Hens knocked off UNCW 11-9 in the first game and jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the title game before the Seahawks rallied for a 10-8 victory to capture the title.

Yezzo, who earned third team All-CAA honors for the regular season, was a tough out in the CAA Tournament. He hit .517 for the tournament, banging out 15 hits in 29 at bats, and also scored 10 runs, knocked in 11 RBI, collected four doubles, one tripe, and two home runs, including a grand slam vs. UNCW. He also fielded all 55 chances perfectly on defense.

He hit safely in all six games, including going 4 for 5 with a triple and grand slam in the first game of the final day of competition vs. UNCW. He also went 3 for 5 with two RBI vs. Towson and was 3 for 5 with four RBI, a double, and a home run in the second win over Hofstra.
