Murray brought the University of Delaware football program out of obscurity and into the role of a national small college power. He took over the UD program in 1940 and led the team to an eight-year record of 49-16-2 in 1940-50, including a still standing Blue Hen record of 32 straight games without a loss and the 1946 national small college title and Cigar Bowl victory. He also served as director of athletics at Delaware for 11 years and is a member of the College Football and Delaware Sports Halls of Fame. He served as executive director of the American Football Coaches Association in 1966.
