DR. JANICE JORDAN COLEMAN

A 20-year member of the University of Delaware faculty, Janice Jordan Coleman was a pioneer in the area of academic counseling for Blue Hen student-athletes. An Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Development, she was appointed as the first Director of Student Services for Athletes for the UD athletics program in 1990 and served for eight years in that capacity. A native of Lexington, NC., Janice earned her bachelor's degree from Antioch (Ohio) College in 1971, her master's degree from Delaware in 1975, and her doctorate from the University of Maryland in 1985. As Director of Student Services for Athletes, she coordinated classes on study skills and drug education and made student-athletes aware of academic and social resources on campus. She served as a counselor, mentor, and friend to hundreds of Blue Hen student-athletes. She passed away in 1998 following a courageous battle with cancer. UD Student Services for Athletes presents an award each May in her honor which recognized a student-athlete who has overcome obstacles to excel academically and earn a degree.
