WILLIAM E. "BILL" VERGANTINO

Known for his heart and determination and his ability to direct the Wing-T offense to near perfection, Bill was a rare four-year starting quarterback and led Delaware to some of its greatest triumphs for Hall of Fame coach Tubby Raymond. A native of Levittown, Pa., Bill established 24 school records during his career in 1989-92 and led the Hens to a record of 34-14 with NCAA Tournament appearances in 1991 and 1992. He served as co-captain for the 1992 squad that advanced to the national semifinals. He established school career standards for most wins by a quarterback (34), total offensive yards (9,051), yards passing (9,051), touchdown passes (47), and yards rushing by a quarterback (2,564) and was named the 1993 UD Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year. A 1993 Delaware graduate, he passed for 1,536 yards as a freshman in 1989 when he was named the ECAC Eastern and Yankee Conference Rookie of the Year. He has been active in youth sports as a coach in soccer, basketball, baseball, and football. Vergantino has also been on the founding boards of two non-profit organizations, including the Blue Hen Sports Alumni Family Fund (www.bhsaff.com) which helps ex-UD athletes and their families who are going through extended periods of hardship due to illness.
