He began his football coaching career as an assistant coach at Tyrone (Pa.) High School and later worked 19 seasons in the high school ranks in Delaware, serving as an assistant at Conrad and Dickson high schools and later as head coach at nearby Christiana High School.

He served Christiana High School until 1980 and led the Vikings to the state title in 1977. He also served on the UD football coaching staff for seven years from 1981-88, leading the Blue Hen freshman team for six seasons and serving as offensive ends coach in 1987 under Hall of Fame coach Tubby Raymond.
