Bernard Muir

Bernard M. Muir served as University of Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services from July 6, 2009 until July, 2012. He was named director of athletics at Stanford University on July 27, 2012 (related story).
Muir, a former collegiate athlete, previously served as director of athletics at Georgetown University since 2005.
In addition to his duties as director, Muir (pronounced "myour") served as the primary sports administrator for men's and women's basketball, football, and softball.
Muir earned an impressive honor in February, 2012 when he was appointed to the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee for a five-year term beginning in the 2012-13 academic year. The committee oversees all aspects of NCAA collegiate men's basketball at the Division I level and serves as the selection committee for the NCAA Tournament. (related story)
Before joining the athletics administration at Georgetown, Muir served as deputy director of athletics/administration and facilities at the University of Notre Dame from 2004-2005. He also served at Notre Dame as senior associate athletic director for student welfare and development from 2003-2004 and as associate athletic director for student welfare and development from 2000-2003.
Muir, a native of Gainesville, Fla., worked for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) from 1998-2000 as director of operations for the Division I men's national basketball championship and from 1992-1998 as assistant director of the Division I men's national basketball championship.
He began his career in athletics administration as an athletic administrative assistant at Butler University in 1990, and subsequently held positions with Auburn University and Streetball Partners International of Dallas.
In 2007 Muir was named to Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal's "Top 40 Under 40."
Muir earned a bachelor's degree in organizational behavior and management from Brown University in 1990 and a master's in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992.
In January, 2010, Muir was appointed by the NCAA to a prestigious post on the USA Basketball Board of Directors. He will serve on the board through 2012. He replaced former NCAA appointee Gene Smith, The Ohio State University Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics, who stepped down. Based in Colorado Springs, Colo., USA Basketball is a nonprofit organization and the national governing body for men's and women's basketball in the United States and is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions, as well as for some national competitions.
In January, 2011, Muir was selected to a post on the McLendon Scholarship Steering Committee, serving as one of five new members representing non-Football Bowl Championship institutions. The committee works towards the advancement of the McLendon Foundation and the education of young minority sports professionals.
As an undergraduate at Brown University Muir was a four-year letter winner and co-captain of the men's basketball team his senior year.
Muir and his wife, Liz, have two daughters, Libby and Millie.
Liz (nee Berg), a former NCAA membership services representative, was a standout volleyball player at the University of North Carolina. She earned four varsity letters for the Tar Heels, was a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, and was named to the prestigious All-ACC 50th Anniversary Team.
