Brian Baptiste was named Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance at the University of Delaware in June, 2010 and promoted to the title of Associate Director of Athletics in September, 2011.
A 2005 graduate of Towson University who earned his Juris Doctor from St. Thomas University School of Law in 2008, Baptiste (pronounced "bap-teest") will be responsible for directing, planning, and organizing all phases of Delaware's compliance program for 21 varsity sports, nearly 600 student-athletes, athletics department and University staff, representatives of athletics interests, and other outside constituencies.
The position involves education, monitoring, and enforcement of University, CAA, and NCAA rules and regulations.
In addition, Baptiste also serves as sport administrator for UD field hockey.
He works closely with UD Student-Athlete Eligibility and Financial Aid Coordinator Kerri Cebula to ensure that initial and continuing eligibility certification is completed and will oversee an enhanced comprehensive interactive rules education program involving student-athletes, coaches, administrators, alumni and friends of Blue Hens athletics.
While earning his law degree, Baptiste served as a judicial intern for the honorable Donald L. Graham of the Southern District of Florida, as a law clerk for the firm of Cole, Scott & Kissane, and as a certified legal intern with the Broward County State Attorney's Office.
Prior to joining the athletics compliance staff at Georgetown University, he served as a primary source verification specialist with Kaiser Permanente in Rockville, Md.
While at Georgetown University, Baptiste was responsible for monitoring various aspects of compliance related to amateurism, eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, benefits, National Letter of Intent program, and playing/practice seasons.
"We recognize that having a robust compliance program is critically important to the success of any intercollegiate athletics program and providing a professional and helpful compliance staff, focused on service to our student-athletes and coaches continues to be a priority," said University of Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Bernard Muir in announcing the hiring. "We are excited to have Brian join our team. I was able to see first-hand Brian's service-oriented professionalism in his work with coaches, student-athletes and staff at Georgetown and I know that his approach to compliance will be extremely helpful to our coaches and staff as well as the broader University community."
