Dr. Susan Groff Costa, Ed.D

Associate Director of Athletics

Dr. Susan L. Groff Costa, Ed.D enters her 16th year at the University of Delaware in 2012-13, continuing her role as the Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities & Operations.

Groff Costa's overall responsibilities include athletic operations, post-season championships, team scheduling, and facility management. She is also the program administrator to women’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, and women’s rowing, and is the secondary administrator for women's basketball. She also continues to serve as the senior woman administrator (SWA).

Her facility management responsibilities encompass the David M. Nelson Athletic complex, including Delaware Stadium, the Delaware Field House and the Bob Carpenter Center and the BCC new addition. She oversees new construction, major maintenance and renovation projects as well as oversight of the Grounds Crew assigned to athletics.

Her athletic operations duties include all scheduling and contracts matters for competition, all game management including football game day, and oversight of any championship or post-season play. She also oversees student-athlete well-being and development, which includes oversight of Student Services for Athletes (SSA). Collectively, SSA and Groff Costa, work in conjunction with Career Services and Student Leadership to develop excellent programming opportunities for our student-athletes.

She most recently served on the NCAA Legislative Council, NCAA Peer Review Team, and the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Committee. She continues to serve on the Colonial Athletic Association Competition Committee in addition to her daily responsibilities.

Groff Costa came to Delaware after working two years as assistant director of athletics and head women's lacrosse coach at Drexel University. She earned her bachelor's degree in business administration and finance from Longwood College in Farmville, Va. in 1986 and received her master's degree in sports administration from West Chester (Pa.) University in 1993. She received her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Delaware in August, 2012.

While at Longwood, Groff Costa was a standout in lacrosse and field hockey. In lacrosse, she was a four-year team Most Valuable Player, was a three-year United States Women's Lacrosse Association All-American, played in the North-South Senior All-Star Game, and was a three-year member of the United States Women's Lacrosse Squad. In field hockey, she was a four-year letterwinner and team Most Valuable Player as a senior.

After graduation she served as junior managerial accountant for General Medical in Richmond, Va. and was a financial analyst for Intracorp in Berwyn, Pa. for three years.

She began her administrative career in athletics in 1991 as graduate assistant at West Chester University and served there for two years. At Drexel, she served as assistant director of athletics and was responsible for scheduling, transportation, facility management, tickets, and home game management. She helped direct NCAA compliance for Drexel's 18-sport NCAA Division I program while also serving as the Dragons' head women's lacrosse coach for two seasons in 1994-95.

She and her husband, Victor J. Costa, reside in Rock Hall, Md.
