Rob Cross, who served previous coaching stints at NCAA Division I programs Rutgers, Harvard, and UMBC, was named an assistant coach for the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse staff in August, 2011.

A 2005 sociology graduate of UMBC where he was a three-year standout midfielder, Cross begins his second season with the Blue Hens in 2013.

“We are extremely excited to add Rob Cross to our staff,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. “Rob’s background is exceptional, having coached at UMBC with three NCAA tournament experiences followed by coaching opportunities at Harvard and Rutgers. He is an excellent teacher with his primary strengths being in the offensive end of the field and working with goalies. One of his strongest features is his ability to relate to players and to motivate them to excel.”

Cross began his coaching career at Mercyhurst (Pa.) College where he served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, leading the Lakers to the NCAA Division II national semifinals. Mercyhurst ranked among the top offensive teams in the nation during the season.

He returned to his alma mater in 2007 and served three seasons as an assistant coach and co-offensive coordinator for the Retrievers under head coach Don Zimmerman. During his time at UMBC, the Retrievers owned one of the most powerful offensive units in college lacrosse which led the squad to America East conference titles in 2008 and 2009 and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007, 2008, and 2009. The 2007 squad fell to Delaware in the national quarterfinals.

Following his three seasons at UMBC, Cross moved to Harvard where he assisted head coach John Tillman for one season in 2010. Despite a 6-6 record, the Crimson offense flourished under Cross' tutelage, ranking in the top 20 nationally in scoring offense and in the top 15 in extra man offense. While at Harvard, he also assisted in the organization and planning of practices, film breakdown, scouting reports and recruiting.

Cross then coached at Rutgers University where he served under head coach Jim Stagnitta for one season in 2011. The Scarlet Knight opened the season at 4-0 before finishing with a mark of 6-9.

A three-year letterwinner as a midfielder at UMBC, Cross played in 34 games over three seasons and scored 15 goals while dishing out two assists for the Retrievers. He scored two of his career goals vs. Delaware.

A native of Black River, N.Y., Cross starred at Carthage High School where he was a two-time all-league performer and helped lead the squad to the state championship game in 2000.
