Assistant Coach Doug English

Doug English, who served as an assistant at George Washington University during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, was named assistant coach for the defending Colonial Athletic Association champion University of Delaware women’s volleyball squad on April 21, 2011.
English, who also served previous stints as an assistant at three NCAA Division I programs, joins a staff that includes head coach Bonnie Kenny and associate head coach Cindy Gregory. Kenny and Gregory will both begin their 10th seasons at Delaware in 2011.
"Doug has a great passion for volleyball,” said Kenny, the 2010 CAA Coach of the Year who has led the Blue Hens to three NCAA Tournament appearances and league titles in the last four years. “He is good in the gym and has a good eye for talent. Doug brings experience in all aspects at this level and is exactly what we wanted in this position. I am excited about him joining our staff and look forward to working with him."
English served at George Washington the past two seasons under head coach Jojit Coronel. The Colonials went 17-15 last season after posting a 21-12 mark and an Atlantic 10 Tournament berth in 2009.
The La Crescenta, Calif. native was honored as a “30 Under 30” Award winner from the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2010 when he worked with the middle hitters and liberos. He coached one second team all-conference middle hitter and a libero who recorded over 1,000 digs in two seasons. English was also responsible for team defense, scouting, match preparation, and special events while also serving as camp director in addition to his duties as recruiting coordinator.
"I am excited for the opportunity to work at the University of Delaware,” said English. “With the building of the new facility and the past success they have had, it is the perfect time to be a part of the Blue Hen volleyball program. I am excited to have a part in the continuing growth of Delaware volleyball as we strive to become one of the premier volleyball programs in the country."
English arrived at George Washington after spending three years as an assistant coach for the Boise State University volleyball program. Prior to that, English was an assistant coach at Fordham and at Loyola Marymount University. He helped guide Fordham to a 19-14 mark in 2005, its first winning record since the 1990 season. At Boise State, he was the recruiting coordinator and assisted with opponent scouting, tape exchange, and on-court training.
A 2004 graduate of Cal State Northridge with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, English was a four-year starting libero on the Matadors men's volleyball team. He was named a 2003 AVCA first team All-American as well as being a first team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) selection.
In 2004, he wrapped up his collegiate career as the school's career, season, and single-match leader in digs and was named the 2004 Cal State Northridge Scholar Athlete of the Year. Academically, he was named to the MPSF All-Academic Team all four years.
