NEWARK, Del. – UNCW scored six runs in the top of the first inning and held off Delaware to win the rubber game of the weekend series, 11-8, Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Ethan Baucom doubled home the first two runs of the game, while Bryan Arendt capped the first inning outburst with a two-run homer to give the Seahawks the big early lead.
UNCW added a run in the third on an RBI groundout by Matt Suggs, while Baucom drilled a solo homer in the fifth to make it an 8-0 game.
Delaware got on the board in the sixth, as Jake Dunion scored on an infield single by Joey Loynd before Aidan Kane crossed the plate on a throwing error.
Chris Thornburn singled home a run for the Seahawks in the top of the seventh, but after John Weglarz and Bryce Greenly led off the bottom half with singles, Joseph Carpenter belted a three-run homer to bring the Blue Hens within 10-5.
Baucom drilled his second homer of the day in the top of the eighth, while JJ Freeman legged out an infield single to chase home Loynd in the bottom half.
Delaware tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, as Kane doubled home Dunion and later scored on a wild pitch, but the Blue Hens would not get closer.
Freeman, Dunion, Kane and Loynd each finished with two hits at the plate for Delaware, with Carpenter driving in three.
Jim Sherman
"The first inning was a tough inning for us, they hit the ball a little bit and we didn't make some good choices defensively. So that gave us a hole to dig out of, which was tough. We won the second half of the game, if it's any consolation, but we just didn't play well enough defensively in the first three innings and that was the difference. We've got to be better and sharper, and we'll try to tighten things up Tuesday before leaving for Charleston."
