Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens
Herb Courtney • Men's Basketball

January 14, 2008

Athlete photoNEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware senior forward Herb Courtney, who led the Blue Hen men's basketball squad to two thrilling overtime victories in Colonial Athletic Association play last week, has been named the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 14.

Courtney, a 6-7 senior forward from Horsham, PA (Hatboro-Horsham High School), scored 19 points and pulled five rebounds as Delaware rallied from a 19-point second half deficit to down CAA pre-season favorite George Mason 73-68 in overtime Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

On Saturday, Courtney starred again as he scored a season-high 27 points and pulled 11 rebounds to lead the Blue Hens to an 81-74 win over Old Dominion in double overtime at the Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware overcame a seven-point deficit in the second half to send the game into overtime and Courtney hit a three-pointer late in the first overtime period to extend the game to a second extra session.

Courtney, a hotel, restaurant, and institutional management major, hit 15 of 27 shots from the field for the week, connected on 5 of 13 three-point attempts, and averaged 23 points and 8 rebounds per game.

For the season, the pre-season first team All-CAA pick Courtney is averaging a team-high 14.6 points per game to go with 6.1 rebounds per game.

Delaware continues action Wednesday when the Hens travel to defending CAA champion Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond, VA.
