NEWARK, Del. -- Senior swimming standout Hans Gillan, who won three events and set three records in leading Delaware to a dual meet victory over Drexel on Saturday, is the Army ROTC Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending January 17.

Gillan, a senior economics major from Boca Raton, Fla. (North Broward Prep), led a Blue Hen sweep on Senior Day as the UD men downed Drexel 180-114 and the UD women captured a 212-81 victory. The meet was the final Colonial Athletic Association meet of the season for the Blue Hens.

Gillan, who also was named the CAA Male Swimmer of the Year for his performance, led the way vs. Drexel as the veteran speedster posted record-setting times in three events.

Gillan, who earned weekly Best of the Blue Hens honors for the third time in his two-year career for the Blue Hens after transfering from the University of Georgia, won two individual titles and a relay event during the meet.

In the 100-backstroke, he finished first and set a pool record with a time of 50.18 before also earning the top spot in the 100-fly after placing in 49.43. He also opened the meet by teaming with Craig Young, Ross Buckwalter, and Grady Carter to grab the 400-medley relay as the foursome finished in 3:26.56.

Each of Gillan’s teammates on the relay squad also captured individual titles during the meet. Buckwalter won the 100-breaststroke in 57.78, Carter grabbed the 100-freestyle in 46.02, and Young clinched the 200-backstroke in 1:52.63.

Delaware will return to action on January 27 when the team wraps up its home slate with a 6 p.m. showdown against Widener.
