NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware senior diving standout Matt Abbruzzese, who won two events in leading the Blue Hen men's swimming and diving team to a win over William & Mary in its final home meet of the season Saturday, is the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 25.

He also was named Colonial Athletic Association Male Co-Diver of the Week for the fifth time in his career on Tuesday.

Abbruzzese, an honor student from Merrick, N.Y. (Bellmore High School), won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events Saturday as the Blue Hens downed Colonial Athletic Association rival William & Mary 176.5-123.5 at Rawstrom Pool.

He won the one-meter event with a score of 304.05 to qualify for a spot in the NCAA Zone ‘A’ Diving Championships to be held at the University at Buffalo from March 12-15. He also won the three-meter event with a score of 289.58.

On January 13, he garnered his fourth career CAA Diver of the Week award after sweeping the 1- and 3-meter events against Towson. It was his first honor of the season after winning one as a freshman and two as a sophomore.

He is a double major in communications and Italian at Delaware.
