NEWARK, Del. -- John Viotto, who led the University of Delaware men's indoor track and field squad to a first place team finish at the UD/Thomson Invitational Saturday at Delaware Field House, is the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 1.

Viotto, a sophomore from Dayton, N.J. (South Brunswick High School), continued his winning ways in the shot put this winter as he captured his third individual title of the season by winning the event with a throw of 51-feet, 5 1/2-inches, defeating the second place finisher by almost three inches.

Delaware won the men's and women's team titles in an event that drew over 60 teams and over 800 athletes and was one of the largest collegiate indoor meets in the region this season.

Viotto, who has already qualified for the IC4A Indoor Championships March 7-9 in Boston, has won three times this season, capturing the shot put title at the Jack Pyrah Invitational at Haverford, the John Covert Classic at Lehigh, and the Thomson Invitational. He also placed fourth in the shot put at the Penn State Open two weeks ago.

A communication major at Delaware, Viotto won the Best of the Blue Hens Award for the second time in his career after also being honored last Jan. 28, 2008 as a freshman.

Delaware will return to action this weekend when the Hens compete at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City Feb. 6-7 and at the Princeton Invitational Feb. 7.
