NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore baseball first baseman Ryan Cuneo (at right) has been named the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 25.

Cuneo, a business major from Freehold, NJ (Freehold High School), played a key role in helping the Blue Hen baseball squad win two out of three games in a season-opening series at The Citadel this past weekend in Charleston, SC.

Delaware (2-1) won the season opener 7-2 on Saturday as Cuneo delivered a career-high four hits, scored a run, and knocked in two others while handling 14 chances flawlessly at first base. He delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth inning and another RBI single in the seventh.

The Hens dropped the second game of the doubleheader by a score of 12-0 before coming back to win the third and final game of the set by a 6-4 score Sunday.

His four hits were the most on opening day since Matt Ardizzone went 5 for 6 vs. Coastal Carolina in 1997.

For the series, Cuneo went 5 for 12 for a .421 batting average, scored a run, knocked in two others, and drew a walk.
