NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware senior softball pitcher Carolynn Sloat (at right) is the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 2.
Sloat, a four-year standout and elementary education major with a minor in history from Ballston Lake, NY (Shenendehowa HS), enjoyed a record-breaking week as she led the Blue Hens (8-14-1, 2-4 CAA) to a 3-2 record, including a doubleheader sweep over in-state rival Delaware State.
She ent 2-1 with a 0.35 earned run average in three appearance during the week, posting wins over Delaware State and Towson. She allowed just two runs, one earned, on 13 hits in 20.0 innings of work.
Sloat gave up one earned run on six hits in the 2-1 win over Delaware State on Wednesday, allowed one unearned run on four hits in Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Towson while setting the UD record for career strikeouts, and threw a three-hit shutout in the 6-0 win over Towson on Sunday to tie the Blue Hen mark for career victories.
She is now 58-51 in her career with 560 strikeouts. She broke the previous record of 555 strikeouts by Kristi O'Connell (1997-2000) and tied O'Connell's mark for victories.
