NEWARK, Del. -- Senior leftfielder Bill Merkler, who led the University of Delaware baseball team to a strong showing at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships this past weekend, is the Army ROTC Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending May 25.

Merkler, a criminal justice major from South Plainfield, N.J. (South Plainfield High School), earned All-Tournament honors as the Hens went 1-2 at the CAA Tournament this past weekend at Wilmington, N.C.

The No. 6 seed Blue Hens, dropped a 6-5 heartbreaker to top-ranked George Mason in the opening game of the tournament Wednesday before coming back to down Northeastern 9-5 on Thursday. However, the Hens' post-season run ended on Friday with a 5-4 setback to host UNC Wilmington.

Merkler started the CAA Tournament off with a bang, going 4 for 4 with two home runs and three runs batted in in the loss at George Mason. He collected a hit in the win over Northeastern and added two more in the setback to UNCW. For the tournament, he batted .583 with four runs, scored, two home runs, and three RBI.

A third team All-CAA selection for the regular season, Merkler finished the 2009 campaign ranked second on the team with both a.371 batting average and 54 runs batted in and tied for the team leadership with 17 home runs. He ended is stellar career at UD with 37 career home runs.
