NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen sophomore Colin Smith, who shot a 69 on Saturday to earn a second place finish in the individual standings while also leading the University of Delaware golf team to a second place finish in the overall standings at the Navy Fall Classic, is the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending September 15.
A day after shooting a 70 in the first round of action, Smith shot a two-under par on Saturday to finish three-under for the tournament at the par 71, 6,611-yard USNA Golf Course.
Smith, an exercise science major at Delaware, resides in West Chester, Pa. and played his high school golf at Salesianum School in Wilmington, Del.
Led by his performance, the Blue Hens eventually made up significant ground on the final day of the tournament, moving from eighth place on Friday to second following the final round. Of the 17 teams in the tournament, only George Washington finished with a better score.
The Colonials won the invitational with a team score of 572, followed by Delaware at 581. Saint Joseph’s was third at 586, while Navy was fourth at 587 and Siena placed fifth at 591.
Delaware takes next weekend off before competing in the Cornell Invitational on September 27-28 in Ithaca. N.Y.
