NEWARK, DE (Sept. 23, 2007) -- University of Delaware junior tennis player Nolan Greenberg had a weekend worthy of praise after winning all three of his flights at Lehigh University’s ECAC Men’s Tennis Open Title this past weekend.
Greenberg won the Flight Two final, helping Delaware tie for the team title in the annual championship. His stellar performance also earned him this week’s Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for the period ending September 23.
The 10-team, two-day event saw Delaware represented in three of the four singles matches. None, however, were more dominant than Greenberg, who made quick work of his first flight opponent, Cabrini College’s Justin Walsh, 6-0, 6-2.
Greenberg then held on despite diversity in his second flight against Lafayette’s Lee Kojanis, winning 7-5, 6-7(1), 6-1. And in the weekend’s Flight Two final, he defeated Troy List of Lehigh handily, winning 6-1, 6-1.
The Glendale, WI native shows similarities to that of retired tennis legend Andre Agassi with his “grind it out on the baseline” style of play.
“I just wait it out and attack when I get the opportunity,” said Greenberg. “I won the first match fairly easily, and ultimately ended up winning the second because all of my conditioning paid off, which was a nice feeling. In the final, I think he just got discouraged after the first set.”
Greenberg cites the support of the team as what gets him motivated during long tournaments.
“I definitely thrive off the team," said Greenberg. "Seven people from my high school [Nicolet High School in Glendale, WI] went on to play Division I tennis. We won state championships together, and ever since then, I’ve loved having a team around. There’s always someone cheering for you, always someone watching your set. It’s a good feeling.”
So after such a successful weekend, how did the hotel and restaurant management major celebrate? By locking himself in his room and studying for 2 ½ hours.
“I had three tests and a group project this week," joked Greenberg. "I celebrated briefly Sunday night, but then had to buckle down."
Whoever said being a college student-athlete was glamorous must have just been causing a racquet.
