NEWARK, DE (Oct. 1, 2007) -- It was a busy weekend for University of Delaware outside hitter Colleen Walsh. Not only did the she lead the Fightin’ Blue Hens’ volleyball squad to a 3-0 week, but the co-captain set the all-time kills record in the process.
Tallying 58 kills, 12 digs, 3 blocks and an ace on the weekend, was more than enough to make Walsh the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for Oct. 1.
Walsh has help lead the Delaware squad to the best start in the program’s history at 18-2 (3-0 in the Colonial Athletic Conference).
One would think the team would hold quite the swagger in the locker room these days, but Walsh says that it’s business as usual.
“The feeling in the locker room right now is pretty good, but it’s important when you’re winning to stay focused. You can’t come into the gym and not work hard anymore,” she said.
Surpassing Karen Kunselman’s 1,553 kills takes a lot of preparation and hard work. So naturally, the senior economics major and co-captain Megan Welch turn to Quiznos for some serious pre-game nutrition each week.
Aside from a turkey, bacon and guacamole sub, Walsh credits her accomplishment to her teammates and the program.
“I think it’s a mark of our program’s success. If it hadn’t been for that, getting in the position to set the record wouldn’t have been possible,” said Walsh.
Whether it was the pre-game meals or the in-game performance, Colleen Walsh stands alone atop the record books here at UD.
The scariest part? She has the entire second half of the season to go.
