NEWARK, Del. -- Redshirt freshman Kelvin McNeil, who led the Blue Hen men's basketball squad to a big road victory at the University of Vermont Sunday, is the Army ROTC Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending December 21.

McNeil, a 6-9 guard from Newport News, Va. (Menchville HS), posted his second double-double of the season by recording career-highs of 13 points and 13 rebounds during the Blue Hens’ 56-50 victory at Vermont on Sunday. He went 5 of 13 from the field, was 3 of 4 from the foul line, and added a block and a steal in Delaware’s third win of the season.

For his efforts, he was also named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Week.

The Catamounts used a 9-0 run early in the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 38-32 but McNeil ended the spurt with a jumper at the 11:23 mark, and following a free throw by Vermont’s Maurice Joseph, McNeil converted a three-point play to bring the Blue Hens back within two. After Joseph again went one of two from the foul line, McNeil scored another layup to make it a one-point game at the 9:38 mark.

McNeil capped his second half scoring by hitting a free throw with 1:04 remaining to extend the Blue Hens’ margin to eight, a lead they would not relinquish.

McNeil, who has appeared in all 10 games and has started the last eight, leads the Blue Hens with 6.9 rebounds per game and ranks fourth with 6.2 points per outing. He has grabbed at least nine rebounds in four of the last six games, leading Delaware in boards during all four of those contests.

McNeil currently ranks seventh in the CAA with 6.9 rebounds per game, ninth with 4.6 defensive rebounds per game, and 11th with 2.3 offensive rebounds per game.

McNeil and the Blue Hens return to action on Wednesday to face eighth-ranked Villanova at 7 p.m. at The Pavilion.
