Baseball Falls to UNC Greensboro, 6-5, in
Extra Innings

GREENSBORO,
NC -- Sophomore Bryan Hagerich
(Somerset, PA/Somerset) went 2-for-4 with
two runs scored but the University of
Delaware baseball team fell to UNC
Greensboro, 6-5, in 11 innings on Saturday
afternoon at the UNC Greensboro Baseball
Stadium in the second game of the teams'
season-opening three-game
series.
Freshman
Matt Heppner (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead)
(0-1) took the loss for the Hens, who have
begun the season 0-2, after replacing Mike
McGuire (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) in the
11th inning. UNC Greensboro's Wes McCall
(1-0) picked up the win for the Spartans,
who improved to 2-0.
With
the game tied at five in the 11th inning,
Heppner walked Danny McClure, who then
advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Jeremy Roulin. After intentionally walking
Chris Mason, Justin Crist stepped to the
plate with two men on and one out. Crist
hit the ball to second baseman Brock
Donovan (New Castle, DE/William Penn) who
threw to shortstop Todd Davison (Somers
Point, NJ/St. Augustine) for the force at
second. However, Davison's throw to first
was wild and McClure scored to end the
game.
Kelly
Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City-right)
batted 2-for-4 and scored one run, Donovan
hit 2-for-5 with two RBI and a double in
the sixth, and freshman Adam Tsakonas
(Pottstown, PA/Boyertown Area) added a run
scored triple in the fifth.
Jason
Rogers (New Castle, DE/William Penn)
started the game for Delaware and allowed
five hits and two earned runs in six
innings of work. He was replaced in the
bottom of the seventh by McGuire, who
pitched four innings and allowed three
earned runs on four hits.
Roulin
led the UNC Greensboro attack by going
3-for-5 and scoring one run while Mason
batted 2-for-4 and added two runs scored.
Crist and McClure each added a run and an
RBI for the Spartans.
Ryan
Falcon started for the Spartans, allowing
four hits and three earned runs in five
innings. Currin replaced Falcon and
allowed two hits before being relieved two
innings later by McCall, who gave up one
hit and one unearned run in 3.1 innings on
the mound.
The
Spartans took the early lead again in the
first inning as Mason reached first base
on a fielders choice and scored when Crist
doubled to right field.
The
Hens responded in the fifth inning when
Hagerich walked and scored on Tsaknoas's
triple to right center. Tsakonas then
scored when Brent Rogers (Claymont, DE/Mt.
Pleasant) flied out to center to give
Delaware a 2-1 lead. In the sixth Delaware
increased its lead to 3-1 when Buber
singled, advanced to third on a wild pitch
and a Dave Harden (Wilmington,
DE/Dickinson) fly-out, and crossed the
plate when Donovan doubled to
left.
The
Spartans cut the lead to one in the sixth
when Roulin crossed the plate on a Linney
sacrifice fly, and tied it in the seventh
when Gonzalez did the same on a McClure
sacrifice fly.
Delaware
took the lead back in the eighth when
Buber reached on an error and was replaced
at first by Dan Richardson (Bear,
DE/Caravel), who advanced to second on an
error by the pitcher during a pickoff
attempt and scored when Donovan singled to
center.
However
UNC Greensboro added a pair of runs of its
own in the eighth to regain the lead.
Mason singled and advanced to second when
Crist walked, and Maule walked to load the
bases. Mason then scored on an Adams
sacrifice fly that brought Crist to third,
and Crist then crossed the plate when
Deleo singled to third base to give the
lead back to the Spartans.
The
Hens tied the game back up in the ninth at
5-5 when Hagerich started off the inning
by singling to center and advanced to
third when Brandon Menchaca (Wilmington,
DE/Concord) reached on an error and Rogers
grounded out. Hagerich then scored when
Ryan Graham (Danville, IL/Danville)
grounded out to tie the game and send the
game to extra innings, when the Spartans
scored the game-winning run on an error by
Davison.
The
three-game series will continue on Sunday
at noon when a Blue Hen pitcher to be
determined will face UNC Greensboro's Nick
Starnes.
