Baseball Falls to UNC Greensboro, 4-3, as
Spartans Sweep Three-Game

NC (February 20, 2005)-- Senior Brock
Donovan (New Castle, DE/William Penn)
recorded his second straight multi-hit
game for the University of Delaware
baseball team, but the Blue Hens fell to
UNC Greensboro, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon
at the UNC Greensboro Baseball Stadium.
Delaware
(0-3) started junior transfer Brent
Gaphardt (Bel Air, MD/Dundalk) (0-1), who
took the loss in his first career start as
a Blue Hen. UNC Greensboro's Nick Starnes
(1-0) picked up the win while Jonathon
Nichols recorded a save for the Spartans,
who improve to 3-0.
Delaware
had the opportunity to tie the game in the
ninth when Dan Kozek (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)
singled to right field to start the inning
and two outs later stole second. Todd
Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St.
Augustine-right) walked to bring Kelly
Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City) to the
plate with two outs and two men on.
However, Buber lined out to shortstop
Jeremy Roulin to leave Kozek and Davison
stranded and end the game.
Donovan
led the Delaware hitters by going 2-for-4
with an RBI while Kozek went 1-for-2 and
added a pair of runs scored. Davison added
a run scored and an RBI while Brandon
Menchaca (Wilmington, DE/Concord) also
added an RBI.
Gaphardt
allowed three earned runs in five hits
while striking out five in 4.1 innings of
work before being replaced by Chad Kerfoot
(Owings Mills, MD/Northern) in the fifth.
Kerfoot allowed one earned run on four
hits in 3.2 innings.
Justin
Crist led the Spartan attack by going
2-for-4 and adding an RBI. Chris Mason
added a run scored and an RBI while Danny
McClure and Roly Gonzalez each added a run
scored in the effort.
Starnes
pitched six innings, allowing two earned
runs and five hits while striking out
nine. He was replaced by Adam Krieger, who
gave up one run in a third of an inning
before being replaced by
Nichols.
Delaware
opened the scoring in the third inning
when Kozek got hit by a pitch, stole
second, and scored when Menchaca singled
to left field.
UNC
Greensboro battled back and scored a run
of its' own in the bottom of the third
when Gonzalez walked, stole second, and
scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at
1-1. The Spartans then scored three runs
in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead.
The
Blue Hens cut the lead to two in the top
of the sixth and got within one in the top
of the seventh but couldn't get even in
the ninth.
Delaware
continues play on the road when it begins
a three-game series on Ferbruary 26 a noon
double-header with Richmond at Pitt Field.
