Baseball Relies on Two-Out Hitting To
Defeat Richmond, 7-3; Richmond Wins

RICHMOND,
VA -- The University of Delaware baseball
team went 4-for-4 with two outs and men in
scoring position to win game one of
Saturdays double-header with Richmond at
Pitt Field, 7-3, while the Spiders relied
on the bat of junior Ben Zeskind to top
the Blue Hens in game two, 2-1.
freshman
Mike McGuire (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley)
started for Delaware (1-4) in game one and
recorded the Blue Hens' first victory of
the season, allowing three earned runs and
only walking two batters while striking
out six in 5.1 innings on the mound of the
seven-inning game. Richmond (3-3) opened
game one with freshman Brian Alas, who
allowed six earned runs in six innings
pitched to take the loss.
Ryan
Graham (Danville, IL/Danville-at right/on
left) and Todd Davison (Somers Point,
NJ/St. Augustine-at right/on right) both
batted 2-for-3 with a run scored and an
RBI to lead the Hens offense in game one.
Dan Kozek (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) batted
1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI,
Kelly Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City)
smashed the Hens' first home run of the
season with a solo blast in the third,
while Dave Harden (Wilmington,
DE/Dickinson) drove in two RBI with a
double in the fifth.
Jason
Rogers (New Castle, DE/Wiliam Penn) took
the loss in his first decision of the
season after starting game two, despite
allowing just one earned run in six
innings. Meanwhile, Ja Jones picked up his
first decision of the season for the
Spiders with the win, while John Cronin
recorded the save with 2.2 scoreless
innings of work in the nine-inning
game.
Buber
and Harden continued to contribute
offensivley in game two as each batted
2-for-2 with a double, while Bryan
Hagerich (Somerset, PA/Somerset) scored
the only run for the Hens on a Kozek
double.
The
Spiders were led in both games by Ben
Zeskind, who concluded the day batting
3-for-7 with a run scored and an RBI. He
was almost soley responsible for
Richmond's offense in its win in game two.
In the first inning he doubled to
right-center, advanced to third on a wild
pitch, and scored when Joe Mahoney
grounded out to short. In the third inning
Austin Reilly reached on a fielding error
by Graham and scored when Zeskind singled
down the right-field line.
Delaware
concludes the three-game series with
Richmond on Sunday at 12 noon.
