Goes All Nine To Shutout Delaware

DE (May 6, 2005)-- George Mason's Stacen
Gant went the distance for the Patriots
who recorded their first in-conference
shutout, second overall on the season, by
downing the University of Delaware
baseball team, 9-0 on Friday afternoon at
Bob Hannah Stadium.
Gant,
George Mason's all-time leader in wins and
strikeouts, struckout nine batters on the
way to pitching his first shutout since
April 24, 2004.The Blue Hens had not been
held scoreless by any league opponent
prior to the game and had only been
shutout by Stony Brook in an 8-0 loss on
March 12, 2005.
Delaware
dips to 21-23 (9-7 CAA) while the Patriots
improve to 28-16 (10-9 CAA).
The
teams remained scoreless for the first
three innings until George Mason erupted
for six runs in the next three. Matt
Cooksey, who tied a Patriot record for
career runs scored with 205, started it
off by being driven in on a double to
right by Chris Looze. Chris Fournier led
off the top of the fifth with a single and
scored one batter later when Tyler Youngs
sent a double to right-center followed by
a three-run shot by Robby Jacobsen in the
top of the sixth. The Patriots used two
hits and three walks to tack on three more
runs in the top of the ninth to make the
score 9-0.
Kelly
Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba Community)
tossed in two of Delaware's three hits as
Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana)
tallied the other.
Fournier
ended the game with three hits, a double,
and two runs scored while Looze and Adam
Innerst each doubled and laid out singles.
The three batters combined for five runs
scored and three RBI
Mike
McGuire (Swarthmore, PA/RIdley) suffered
the loss and drops to 5-4 after allowing
six runs on six hits in 5.2 innings on the
mound.
The
teams continue their three-game set on
Saturday, May 7 at 1 p.m. at Bob Hannah
Stadium.
