Youngs Leads George Mason Past Delaware

NEWARK,
DE (May 7, 2005)-- George Mason shortstop
Tyler Youngs blasted a solo home run, a
double, and a single to lead the Patriots
past the University of Delaware baseball
team, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Bob
Hannah Stadium.
The
Blue Hens fall to 21-24 (9-8 CAA) while
George Mason continues to climb and
reaches 29-19 (11-9 CAA).
George
Mason broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the
ninth with four consecutive singles. Tyler
Youngs started the charge by heading to
left field followed by Matt York, Matt
Cooksey, and finally Chris Looze who
singled to the right side to score Youngs.
The Patriots kept the bases loaded and
with one out Matt Barrett singled to
center field to score York as Looze and
Cooksey were putout on the double play to
end the inning.
Brandon
Menchaca (Wilmington, DE/Concord), Ryan
Graham (Danville, IL/Triton-top right),
Brent Rogers (Claymont, DE/Mt. Pleasant),
and Adam Tsakonas (Pottstown,
PA/Boyertown) each totaled a pair of hits
for Delaware. Rogers and Graham each
doubled while Tsakonas tripled.
Mitch
Heckert (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin)
drops to 1-1 with the loss after pitching
three innings of relief and allowing two
runs on six hits. Jason Rogers (New
Castle, DE/William Penn) started the game
and allowed one run on five hits while
striking out five in six innings on the
mound.
York
ended his day with three total singles
while Robby Jacobsen tossed in a pair of
hits for the Patriots who tallied 13 for
the afternoon. Seven of those came from
the bats of George Mason's first five
hitters.
J.J.
Pannell claimed the victory and improves
to 1-1 while Jason Mills picks up his
fourth save of the season. Brent Hitz
started the game and allowed one run on
eight hits in 6.2 innings
pitched.
Delaware
took the early lead in the bottom of the
second when Tsakonas sent his triple to
the gap in right-center and scored on a
Bryan Hagerich (Somerset, PA/Somerset)
sacrifice fly. The Patriots tied the game
back up at 1-1 in the top of the third
when Tyler Youngs homered to right
field.
The
teams will play the final game of the
three-game set on Sunday, May 8 when the
Blue Hens will honor their seniors at Bob
Hannah Stadium.
