Washington Uses the Long Ball to Down
Delaware 7-3

NEWARK,
DE -- The University of Delaware
baseball team gave up a season high three
home runs to George Washington, who
combined the offense with a three-hit
complete game by Derrick Lutz to defeat
the Hens 7-3 on Thursday afternoon at Bob
Hannah Stadium.
Kevin
Brown (Wilmington, DE/McKean) (0-1) took
the loss in his first career start for
Delaware (7-8) by giving up all seven of
the Colonials earned runs in six innings
on the mound while George Washington's
Lutz posted 11 strikeouts and no earned
runs for the Colonials (8-7).
The
Hens allowed a first inning home run for
the first time this season and the
three-run shot by Roberson was the most
runs Delaware has allowed in the first
inning all season.
Brent
Rogers (Claymont, DE/Mt. Pleasant) led the
offense batting 2-for-3 with a double and
drove in two runs while Brandon Menchaca
(Wilmington, DE/Concord) tripled in his
second consecutive game and added a run
scored.
The
Blue Hen bullpen allowed no runs and
combined for four strike outs in three
innings as Chris Garrick (Nesconset,
NY/Smithtown) made his first appearance
this season by replacing Brown in the
seventh and was followed by Dan Richardson
(Bear, DE/Caravel) and Darrell Lewis
(Bealeton, VA/Liberty).
George
Washington's three home runs came from
Brad Rosenblat, Joe Michalski, and
Roberson. The trio also combined for seven
of the Colonials 12 hits in the game as
Rosenblat batted 3-for-5 with a double and
Michalski went 3-for-4 with an extra
RBI.
Following
Roberson's first inning three-run homer
and Michalski's solo shot in the second
that put the Colonials up 4-0, Delaware
started chipping away at the lead in the
bottom of the second when Bryan Hagerich
(Somerset, PA/Somerset) was struck out but
reached first when catcher Michalski
dropped the ball and moved to second on
the overthrow to first while Dan Kozek
(Medford, NJ/Shawnee), who reached on a
fielder's choice, moved to third. Hagerich
and Kozek both crossed the plate on
Roger's double to center cutting the lead
to 4-2.
In
the bottom of the third the Hens got
things moving once again when Menchaca
scored on a passed ball after sending a
triple to right-center to make to Colonial
lead 4-3.
George
Washington answered back with an insurance
run of their own in the top of the fourth
when Matt Owens doubled and scored on a
Michalski single.
The
Blue Hens return to action on Saturday,
March 19 when they take on Penn State in a
doubleheader at Bob Hannah Stadium
starting at 12 noon.
