Delaware
Uses Four-Run Seventh To Orchestrate 7-4
Come-From-Behind Victory Over James
Madison
Date:
May 13, 2005
HARRISONBURG,
VA -- The University of Delaware baseball
team rebounded from a 14-4 loss to Rutgers
on Wednesday and used four runs in the top
of the seventh to cap off a four-run
come-from-behind victory over James
Madison, 7-4 in Colonial Athletic
Association action Friday afternoon at
Long Field.
Junior
shortstop Todd Davison (Somers Point,
NJ/St. Augustine-at right) led the charge
by batting 4-for-5, driving in three runs,
and stealing a base while on his way to
batting a home run away from the
cycle.
The
Hens (23-26) hold off the sixth place
Dukes (19-30) and remain in fifth place in
the CAA standings with a 10-9 record in
league play. James Madison dips to 7-12 in
the conference. Delaware has now won the
last six contests with the Duke's
including a three-game sweep from last
season at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Brandon
Menchaca (Wilmington, DE/Concord) broke
the tie with Bryan Hagerich (Somerset,
PA/Somerset) for the team lead in home
runs by blasting a solo home run for his
eighth of the season. The freshman also
singled to join Adam Tsakonas (Pottstown,
PA/Boyertown), who doubled and singled,
for two hits on the afternoon. The trio of
Menchaca, Davison, and Tsakonas combined
for eight of the Hens 11 hits while
Davison and Menchaca were responsible for
driving in four of Delaware's seven
runs.
Brent
Gaphardt (Bel Air, MD/Dundalk) claimed the
victory and improves to 3-5 after pitching
six scoreless innings of relief and
allowing only three hits and two walks
while striking out seven. Mike McGuire
(Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) took the start and
struck out three but allowed all four
runs.
Jacob
Cook suffered the loss and drops to 3-7
after allowing four runs, three earned,
and not recording an out after replacing
starter Brian Leatherwood in the
seventh.
Michael
Cowgill had a solo home run and added a
double for the Duke's while Ryan Reid also
belted a solo homer and Matt Sluder posted
a run-scoring double.
The
Dukes took advantage of McGuire early and
dropped four runs on the freshman in three
innings before he was pulled in favor of
Gaphardt in the fourth. James Madison
centerfielder Doom reached third on a
sacrifice bunt that was misplayed after
being hit by a pitch as the Dukes lead off
batter. He scored when Cowgill grounded
into a double play. Reid sent a solo home
run to right field for James Madison's
first score in the second. Bristow singled
to the third base side and scored when
Sluder doubled to right-center. Cowgill
used the long ball in the bottom of the
third and blasted in the Duke's last run
of the game when he went deep to
center.
Delaware
began chipping away at the 4-0 deficit in
the top of the fourth when Menchaca belted
a solo home run of his own over the wall
in left. Dan Kozek (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)
led off the top of the fifth with a single
and a stolen base and scored when Davison
singled to the right side.
The
Blue Hen rally was halted in the sixth
after Delaware could not convert
Tsakonas's lead off double into a run but
a four-run seventh inning capped off the
Hens comeback to make the score 6-4. Cook
came in to pitch for Leatherwood and
allowed a lead off walk to Brent Rogers
(Claymont, DE/Mt. Pleasant). Ryan Graham
(Danville, IL/Triton) singled to right
followed by Davison who tripled to right
to score Graham and Rogers. Kelly Buber
(Yuba City, CA/Yuba Community) followed
with a single through the right side to
score Davison and advanced to third when
Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana)
reached on a throwing error. McKim entered
the game for Cook and recorded the innings
first out by striking out Tsakonas but a
throwing error on McKim scored Buber
before Menchaca grounded out to end the
inning.
Delaware
tacked on one last run in the top of the
ninth to increase the lead to 7-4.
Valichka was hit by a pitch followed by
Tsakonas who singled. Finally Valichka was
driven in by Hagerich who sent a sacrifice
fly to right field.
The
teams continue their three-game set on
Saturday, May 14 at 1 p.m.
