Todd
Davison Stays Hot as Delaware Baseball
Clinches CAA Playoff Berth With 6-5
Victory Over James Madison
HARRISONBURG,
VA (May 14, 2005)- University of Delaware
shortstop Todd Davison (Somers Point,
NJ/St. Augustine-far right) batted 3-for-3
with a double, two runs scored, and stole
three bases to help the Hens secure a
playoff berth in the Colonial Athletic
Association Tournament by defeating James
Madison, 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Long
Field.
Delaware
(24-26) continues to solidify a fifth
place slot in the conference with a record
of 11-9 while the Dukes (19-31) drop from
sixth to seventh and hold a 7-13 mark in
league play. Even if Delaware was to drop
its final four CAA contests and James
Madison or William & Mary are
victorious in their final games, the three
way tie would favor the Hens, who have
taken two of three in each series so far
to date with those teams.
The
Hens have earned a spot in the tournament
for the second straight year and it will
mark their third appearance
overall.
Down
by three in the bottom of the ninth, Dan
Santobianco sent a two-run shot to
left-center to cut the deficit to 6-5 with
no outs. Matt Bristow followed with a
single up the middle which brought Mitch
Heckert (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin)
in to pitch for the Hens. Heckert ended
the rally and recorded his second save of
the season by forcing Sean Loso into a
ground out, Matt Sluder into a fly out,
and Rob Altieri into a ground
out.
Kelly
Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba Community) sent
a two-run homer to left-center and singled
for three RBI while Brandon Menchaca
(Wilmington, DE/Concord) added a pair of
singles that drove in two runs and stole a
base. Brent Rogers (Claymont, DE/Mt.
Pleasant) tripled and also scored a run
while Ryan Graham (Danville, IL/Triton)
drove in a run on a sacrifice
fly.
Jason
Rogers (New Castle, DE/WIlliam Penn)
claimed the victory and improves to 2-4
after allowing three runs on six hits in
5.1 innings on the mound. He was succeeded
by Chad Kerfoot (Owings, MD/Northern) who
allowed two runs on four hits and struck
out six in only 2.2 innings of work.
Brostow
had a two-run home run that went along
with his single while Michael Cowgill also
chipped in a pair of hits with a
double.
Ryan
Reid took the loss for the Dukes and drops
to 3-4 after allowing five runs on seven
hits in five innings on the mound.
Delaware
took the lead in the top of the second
when Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana)
reached base after being hit by a pitch
and scored from second when Menchaca
singled. The Hens added four more to their
total before James Madison reached the
scoreboard. Bryan Hagerich (Somerset,
PA/Somerset) singled up the middle and
stole second and scored on Menchaca's
second single in the fourth. In the fifth
Brent Rogers led off with a triple and
scored on Graham's sacrifice. Davison was
walked and that led to Buber's two run
homer to give the Hens a 5-0 lead.
The
Dukes began crawling back in the bottom of
the inning with two runs on one hit as
Bristow let his homer fly after
Santobianco walked. James Madison tacked
on another run one inning later when
Cowgill singled to center and Kellen
Kulbacki singled to the right side,
advancing Cowgill to third. Schill dropped
a bunt that went for a single and scored
Cowgill but that ended the innings
scoring.
Delaware's
winning run came in the top of the seventh
when Davison doubled to right-center and
advanced to third on a wild pitch, finally
scoring when Buber singled through the
right side.
The
teams conclude the three-game set on
Sunday at 1 p.m.
