Madison Averts Being Swept by Delaware
Baseball With 9-2 Victory in the Finale of
the Three-Game Set
HARRISONBURG,
VA (May 15, 2005)- James Madison defeated
the University of Delaware baseball team,
9-2 in Colonial Athletic Association
action on Sunday afternoon at Long Field
and with the victory, avert being swept by
the Hens for the second straight
season.
Delaware
(24-27, 11-10 CAA) could only muster two
runs on the afternoon, both of which, came
in a late ninth inning rally that started
with Kelly Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba
Community). Buber singled to left field
and advanced to third when Adam Tsakonas
(Pottstown, PA/Boyertown Area-at right)
doubled down the right field line. Bryan
Hagerich (Somerset, PA/Somerset) followed
with a double to right-center to send the
both home but was stranded on the bag when
Brandon Menchaca (Wilmington, DE/Concord)
struck out to end the game.
James
Madison (20-31, 8-13 CAA) took the early
lead after tacking four on Blue Hen
starter Scott Rambo (Downingtown,
PA/Downingtown) in the first. Michael
Cowgill had a lead off double down the
right field line and moved to third on a
bunt by Skyler Doom. Kellen Kulbacki had
an infield single that drove in Cowgill
and Nate Schill followed with a single to
right. Davis Stoneburner walked and with
the bases loaded Rambo hit designated
hitter Dan Santobianco. Matt Sluder
singled to drive in another run and the
Duke's final run of the inning came when
Rob Altieri was walked, once again with
the bases loaded.
James
Madison finished the afternoon with 12
hits to Delaware's six. The Dukes were led
by Cowgill who scattered three hits for
two RBI and two runs scored on his way to
being a home run away from the cycle.
Schill also added three singles to the
total with two runs scored while Doom and
Altieri both added a pair of
singles.
Tsakonas
added a double to go along with his single
as the only Hen batter to have a multiple
hit game while the previously red hot Todd
Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine)
was held to only one single all
afternoon.
Rambo
suffered the loss after allowing seven
runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings pitched
and drops to 6-4 with the decision. James
Madison's Travis Risser claimed the
victory and improves to 5-3 after pitching
in seven scoreless innings and allowing
only three hits.
The
Dukes dropped another four-run inning on
the Hens in the bottom of the fifth when
Stoneburner and Santobianco both walked to
lead off the inning. They advanced a base
on Sluder's ground out and Stoneburner
scored on Altieri's single up the middle.
Cowgill then sent his triple to left field
two score two runs as he scored himself
when Bristow grounded out. Schill scored
on an error in the bottom of the sixth
after reaching on a single to end James
Madison's scoring rampage.
Delaware
returns home on Wednesday, May 18 for a
single game against Rider at Bob Hannah
Stadium scheduled for 3 p.m.
