Falls to La Salle 5-4 On Ninth Inning Home

NEWARK,
DE -- The University of Delaware baseball
team suffered it's first defeat to La
Salle since 1989, when Grant Harm homered
in the top of the ninth to lead the
Explorers to their first victory of the
season, 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Bob
Hannah Stadium.
The
Hens (6-7), who had previously won the
last 15 contests with La Salle (1-10),
tied the game at four in the eighth
scoring one run on two hits. Dan
Richardson (Bear, DE/Caravel) opened up
the inning with a walk which brought in
Matt Kirsch to pitch. Right away
Richardson stole second and scored when
Brandon Menchaca (Wilmington, DE/Concord)
shot a long ball deep to center field for
a double to tie the game at
4-4.
Gerard
Breslin came in to pitch for the
Explorer's after the tie and let up a
single to Ryan Graham (Danville,
IL/Triton) which advanced Menchaca to
third. With no outs and two men on La
Salle intentionally walked Brock Donovan
(New Castle, DE/William Penn) to load the
bases. The Hen's could not convert another
run with the opportunity as Todd Davison
(Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine) struck
out, Bryan Hagerich (Somerset,
PA/Somerset) struck out, and Brian
Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana) grounded
into a fielder's choice to end the
inning.
Matt
Heppner (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead- at
right) started for Delaware and allowed
three runs, one earned, and six hits in
six innings on the mound but it was Chad
Kerfoot (Owings, MD/Northern) (1-1) who
took the loss for the Hens in the ninth.
Meanwhile, Breslin earned the win for the
Explorers by allowing no runs in two
innings on the mound.
Matt
Heppner (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) started
for Delaware and allowed three runs, none
were earned, and six hits in six innings
on the mound but it was Chad Kerfoot
(Owings, MD/Northern) (1-1) who took the
loss for the Hens in the ninth. Meanwhile,
Breslin earned the win for the Explorers
by allowing no runs in two innings on the
mound.
Kelly
Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba Community) led
the Hens offense in the early going
batting 2-for-3 with a double and a run
scored but was injured while running to
second on the double. Menchaca, Davison,
and Donovan each doubled for Delaware
while Graham added a pair of singles to
the Blue Hen total of 11 hits.
Mitch
Heckert (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin)
pitched in two innings for Delaware coming
from the bullpen and allowed one unearned
run and two hits while striking out
two.
The
Explorers were led by Harm who batted
3-for-4 adding a pair of singles and an
RBI to his solo home run, while Billy Kern
added a double and two hits.
Delaware
jumped out to an early lead as La Salle
starter Anothony Boscaglia walked in two
runs with two outs and the bases loaded
during the first inning. In the second the
Hens increased their lead to 3-0 as Graham
singled, stole second, and advanced to
third when Donovan hit a deep ball to
center field. He scored when Davison
doubled to left-center.
La
Salle cut the Delaware advantage to 3-2
with a two out rally in the fifth as Kern
doubled to right after Essery reached on
an error. Essery scored on a passed ball
and Kern crossed the plate when Ryan
Parfit singled down the right field line.
The Explorers then tied the game in the
top of the sixth when Burge singled and
advanced to second on an overthrow to
first, scoring when Harm singled but was
put out trying to take second
base.
Delaware
continues their homestand tommorrow
afternoon at 2:30 p.m. when they face the
Retrievers of UMBC at Hannah
Stadium.
