Salle Defeats Delaware 2-1 on 10th Inning
Double in Opening Round of Liberty Bell

PHILADELPHIA,
PA (March 31, 2005)-- The University
of Delaware baseball team (10-13) fell to
La Salle University (7-13), 2-1 on
Thursday afternoon at Hank DeVincent
Stadium, when Explorer centerfielder Ryan
Parfitt sent a double to left field in the
10th inning that scored Mike
Essery.
With
only one hit on the board the Hens came
back to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of
the ninth when Bryan Hagerich (Somerset,
PA/Somerset) sent a shot to center field
that went for extra bases and scored when
Brock Donovan (New Castle, DE/William Penn
- right) dropped a single into center.
Brandon
Menchaca (Wilmington, DE/Concord) kept his
hitting streak alive at 11 games when he
blooped a double into centerfield in his
last at bat while Ryan Graham (Danville,
IL/Triton) rounded out Delaware's four
hits with singles.
Matt
Heppner (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) (0-2)
closed out the game and suffered the loss
for the Hens while allowing one unearned
run in two innings pitched. Kevin Brown
(Wilmington, DE/McKean) started the
contest and went seven and a third innings
allowing one run on four hits while
striking out eight.
Gerard
Breslin (3-0) picked up the win for La
Salle coming out of the bullpen. He
allowed only one hit in one and two thirds
of an inning pitched. Brandon Geib took
the start and allowed one hit in five
innings on the mound while striking out
six. The Explorers also received a strong
pitching performance from Jarrod Ringer
who pitched in three and a third innings
and allowed Delaware's only run but gave
up only two hits while striking out
four.
Phil
Marino batted 2-for-4 and added a run
scored while Matt Dunaway, and Billy Kern
each chopped in singles.
La
Salle took the lead in the bottom of the
sixth inning when Marino singled to right
field and was advanced to second on a
sacrifice bunt. He scored on a wild pitch
after reaching third on a passed
ball.
This
was the second time this season that the
Hens have been forced to play catch-up
with the Explorers as they needed a single
run in the bottom of the eighth inning of
their first contest, held in Newark, to
tie the game at 4-4. Grant Harm did the
damage in the top of the ninth with a solo
home run that earned La Salle their first
win of the season.
The
Blue Hens return home on Friday, April 1
to face Towson University in Colonial
Athletic Association action at 3 p.m. at
Bob Hannah Stadium.
