Baseball Defeats Old Dominion In Series
Opener, 4-2
NORFOLK,
VA (April 22, 2005)-- The University of
Delaware baseball team defeated Colonial
Athletic Association foe Old Dominion
University, 4-2 on Friday night at the Bud
Metheny Complex in the opening game of the
three-game set.
Mike
McGuire (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) (4-3)
picked up the win for the Hens (16-19) who
even their conference record to 5-5. Dana
Arrowood (4-5) suffered the loss for the
Monarchs (20-23) who dip to 4-9 in league
play.
The
win gave Delaware head coach Jim Sherman
his 150th career victory. The fifth-year
Blue Hen skipper is now 150-111 in his
head coaching tenure at UD.
Delaware
was led by Brian Valichka (Frederick,
MD/Urbana-at right) who had a pair of
singles and drove in a run while the
bottom five of the Hens lineup combined
for four of the teams six hits.
McGuire
allowed one run on four hits while
striking out nine in seven innings of work
before being replaced by Billy Harris
(Bear, DE/Salesianum) who picked up his
second save of the season.
The
Monarchs were led by Eric Mesa who added a
pair of singles and a run scored while
Arrowood allowed four runs, two earned, on
six hits in seven innings on the
mound.
The
Hens jumped on the Monarchs early as
Valichka drove in Davison, who reached on
a walk, with a single through the left
side. Old Dominion roared back in the
bottom of the third as Joey Schoendiest
reached on a walk and advanced to second
when Evan Chipman singled. He went on to
score and tie the game at 1-1 when Bryan
Cipolla hit an infield single to
short.
Delaware
responded back in the top of the fourth
when Menchaca and Richardson both singled
through the left side and crossed the
plate when Kozek doubled to the hole in
left-center.
The
Hens extended their lead to 4-1 in the top
of the eighth as Valichka and Tsakonas
each singled through the left side and
advanced to scoring position on a passed
ball. Menchaca reached first on a
fielder's choice that scored Valichka but
the inning ended as Richardson grounded
into a double play.
Delaware
held off an Old Dominion rally in th
bottom of the ninth as Mesa singled and
scored when Brooks Sinnen singled and
advanced to second on an error. Harris
caught Justin gregula looking and Patrick
Nichols lined out to short to end the
game.
The
Hens three-game set with the Monarchs
continues on Saturday, April 23 at 5 p.m.
at the Bud Metheny Complex in Norfolk,
VA.
