Delaware Baseball Completes Sweep of Old Dominion With A Pair of Sunday Victory's, 5-3 and 16-4

NORFOLK, VA (April 24, 2005)-- The University of Delaware baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion Sunday, at the Bud Metheny complex by defeating the Monarchs, 5-3 in the continuation of Saturday's suspended game and 16-4in the afternoons regularly scheduled contest.

The Blue Hens improve to 18-19 and 7-5 in league play as they scattered 28 hits on the afternoon with 20 of those coming in the nightcap, dropping Old Dominion to 20-25 and 4-11 in the CAA.

Scott Rambo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown-at right) (5-3) and Brent Gaphardt (Bel Air, MD/Dundalk) (2-4) each picked up wins for the Hens. Gaphardt pitched the first game and allowed three runs, one earned, on eight hits while striking out six in 5.1 innings of work. Billy Harris (Bear, DE/Salesianum) closed out the game and picked up the save by allowing only one hit in 3.2 innings on the mound. Rambo pitched in the second game and allowed one earned run on five hits in 5.1 innings pitched.

Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana) led the Delaware batters with five hits and four RBI on the afternoon including a solo home run in the fourth inning of the first game. Adam Tsakonas (Pottstown, PA/Boyertown Area) laid out four hits including a two RBI triple in the first inning of the second game. Ryan Graham (Danville, IL/Triton) also muscled four hits, two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored while Todd Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine) and Kelly Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba Community) had four hits each while Davison doubled and crossed the plate for four runs scored.

Steve Harris led the Monarchs with four hits, three in the first game, and two runs scored. Jess Schoendienst also had three hits in the first game and drove in two runs on the afternoon. Eric Mesa doubled twice while Patrick Nichols and Chris Keenan each added a double and C.J. Jacinto belted a solo home run in the second game.

Kyle Dubois (4-1) suffered the loss in the first game by allowing five runs, four earned), on eight hits in 8.1 innings on the mound while Bryan Hansen (3-6) took the loss in the second game.

Dan Kozek (Medord, NJ/Shawnee) opened up the first games scoring with a solo home run over the right field fence in the top of the third. The Hens tacked on another run in the top of the fourth when Valichka homered to left. Old Dominion hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Monarchs loaded the bases with a pair of singles by Harris and Shoendienst followed by a sacrifice bunt by Evan Chipman that went for single due to an error by Gaphardt. A wild pitch brought Harris home but Old Dominion could not capitalize on the rally and left two men stranded.

The teams shared a two run sixth inning as Graham led off with a double followed by a Davison single that went for extra bases on an error. Buber plated Davison with a ground out to short. In the bottom of the inning Nichols led off with a doubled and Harris singled through the left side. Shoendienst followed suit and scored Nichols with a single to the left side and Harris crossed when Chipman reached on a fielder's choice.

Delaware tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Tsakonas singled up the middle and the Monarchs loaded the bases on consecutive walks. Dan Richardson (Bear, DE/Caravel) was then hit by a pitch and Tsakonas took the free ride home as strikeouts by Kozek and Graham ended the inning leaving the bases stacked.

The Hens scored four runs on three hits in the top of the first in the second game and never looked back as Delaware increased it's lead to 9-0 with another four run inning in the top of the sixth before Old Dominion could muster a run in the bottom of the inning. Then Hens put five on the board in the eighth and two in the ninth to capture a sturdy 16-3 lead. Jacinto shot a solo home run in the bottom of the inning but Chad Kerfoot (Owings, MD/Northern) managed the threat and sent the next three of the next four batters back to the dugout on ground outs .

Delaware returns home on Tuesday, April 26 to face local rival Wimington College for a single game slated to begin at 3 p.m.
