Baseball Shuts Out Richmond, 7-0, Behind
Rambo and Heckert
RICHMOND,
VA (February 27, 2005)-- Senior co-captain
Scott Rambo (Downingtown,
PA/Downingtown-at right) and sophomore
Mitch Heckert (Harrisburg, PA/Central
Dauphin) combined to record the University
of Delaware baseball team's first shutout
since May 8, 2004 as they blanked
Richmond, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at Pitt
Field.
Rambo
(1-1) recorded the win for Delaware (2-4)
after pitching six scoreless innings,
scattering only three hits and striking
out seven. Heckert replaced Rambo in the
seventh and picked up his first career
save while allowing two hits and striking
out four in three innings of scoreless
relief.
Rob
Berzinskas (0-1) took the loss for the
Spiders (3-4) after allowing two earned
runs and six hits while striking out eight
in five innings on the mound.
Kelly
Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City) led the
Blue Hen attack by posting his third
multi-hit game of the season and extending
his hitting streak to five as he went
2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and
an RBI. Brandon Menchaca (Wilmington
DE/Concord) added two RBI, a run scored,
and stole three bases while Bryan Hagerich
(Somerset, PA/Somerset) also stole three
bases and crossed the pscored two runs.
Dave
Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) batted
2-for-5 with a run scored for the Blue
Hens, Ryan Graham (Danville, IL/Triton)
went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI,
and Donovan added a run scored and an
RBI.
Delaware,
which scored in all but three innings,
took the lead in the third as Graham
doubled to right field, advanced to third
on a passed ball, and scored when Menchaca
grounded out to short.
The
Blue Hen offense then exploded in the
fourth, scoring two runs on two hits.
Donovan reached on a fielding error and
scored when Harden singled to third, and
Harden came home on a wild pitch two
batters later.
The
Spiders had a chance to spoil the shutout
in the ninth as Riggi singled to left
center with one out. However second
baseman Brock Donovan (New Castle,
DE/William Penn) fielded a ground ball hit
by Hale and threw to shortstop Todd
Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine),
who threw to first to turn the game-ending
double play.
Delaware
continues road play on Wedndesday when the
Blue Hens take on George Washington at
2:30 p.m. at Barcroft Park in Arlington,
VA.
