of Delaware Baseball Falls to Rider
University, 4-2 in Final Home
Game
NEWARK,
DE (May 18, 2005)-- The University of
Delaware baseball team fell to Rider
University, 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon at
Bob Hannah Stadium in the Blue Hens final
home game of the 2005 season.
Delaware
(24-28) scattered five hits and was led by
Dan Richardson (Bear, DE/Caravel-at right)
who sent a solo home run over the left
field fence in the bottom of the eighth
for his sixth of the season. The Broncs
(18-29) were carried by Mike Poalise who
batted 2-for-4 with a double and a
triple.
Matt
Heppner (Riverhead, NY Riverhead) took the
loss and drops to 2-3 after allowing four
runs in six innings on the mound. Justin
Roszkowski claimed the victory after
pitching 7.1 innings and allowing two
runs, he improves to 4-3 on the
season.
Delaware
took the early lead in the bottom of the
third when Todd Davison (Somers Point,
NJ/St. Augustine) singled in Brent Rogers
(Claymont, DE/Mt. Pleasant).
The
Broncs retaliated in the top of the fifth
when Justin Squashic reached on an error
by Davison and stole second. Bryan Wagner
singled him in with a shot up the middle.
Wagner then stole second and scored when
Tom Letizia singled to left.
Rider
followed up the fifth inning with two more
runs in the sixth as Scott Knazek was hit
by a pitch and scored on Poalise's triple
to right-center. Poalise scored on
McCreedy's single to left, ending the
Broncs scoring.
Richardson
cut the deficit to 2-4 with his solo home
run but it was not enough as the next six
Hens fell to ground outs and fly outs to
end the game.
Delaware
travels to VCU for the opening-game of a
three-game set slated to begin Thursday,
May 19 at 7 p.m.
