Rutgers Offense Defeats Delaware
14-4
PISCATAWAY,
NJ (May 11, 2005) -- The University of
Delaware baseball team fell to a
high-powered Rutgers offense, 14-4 on
Wednesday afternoon at the Class of '53
Complex.
The
Scarlet Knights tallied at least two runs
in all but two innings at bat.
Steve
Hook led Rutgers (26-18) with a home run,
a double for four RBI. The Scarlet Knights
dropped 13 hits on the Hens (22-26),
including three more doubles coming from
Jeff Grose, Colin Gaynor, and Frank
Meade.
Ryan
Graham (Danville, IL/Triton-at right) had
pair of singles for two RBI and a stolen
base while Bryan Hagerich (Somerset,
PA/Somerset) added a double and a single.
Three
of Delaware's five remaining hits were
doubles that came from Brian Valichka
(Frederick, MD/Urbana), Adam Tsakonas
(Pottstown, PA/Boyertown), and Kelly Buber
(Yuba City, CA/Yuba CC), who also drove in
a run.
Chris
Garrick (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown) took the
loss and drops to 0-2 after allowing five
runs on three hits in two innings on the
mound. Mitch Heckert (Harrisburg,
PA/Central Dauphin) pitched two innings of
solid scoreless relief for the Hens and
allowed only one hit.
Jim
Jansen claimed the Rutgers victory and
improves to 5-1 after pitching eight
innings and allowing only three runs on
seven hits.
The
Scarlet Knights busted right out of the
gates with 11 runs in the first five
innings of play. Todd Frazier led off the
first inning with a walk followed by
Grose, who doubled him to third, only to
finally score on a wild pitch. Grose
scored on a sacrifice hit by Cory
Rodriguez.
In
the second, Frazier sent a sacrifice fly
to right-center that scored Meade, who
had walked. Tim Querns singled through the
right side and loaded the bases, finally
scoring on a wild pitch. He was followed
by Grose who walked and scored on a double
by Gaynor, making the score
5-0.
The
Hens put things together in the top of the
third and scored three runs to cut the
deficit to 5-3. Dan Richardson (Bear,
DE/Caravel) led off with a walk and scored
when Graham singled to left. Graham then
stole second and scored when Todd Davison
(Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine) singled.
Buber doubled in Davison to give the Hens
a charge going into the bottom of the
inning.
Rutgers
retaliated with two more runs in the
bottom of the inning on Delaware reliever
Brent Gaphardt (Bel Air, MD/Dundalk) and
tacked on seven more runs before the Hens
could muster another run in the top of the
ninth.
Delaware
travels to Harrisonburg, VA for a
three-game set with Colonial Athletic
Association opponent James Madison
starting on Friday and going through
Sunday.
The
Dukes hold down the sixth place slot in
the conference while the Hens are planted
in fifth. The first game of the series is
slated for Friday, May 13 at 3
p.m.
