Baseball Drops Doubleheader with Stony
Brook, 5-3 and 8-0
NEWARK, DE
(March 12, 2005)-- The University of
Delaware baseball team's four-game winning
streak came to a halt on Saturday at Bob
Hannah Stadium as the Hens lost their
first game since February 26 by dropping a
doubleheader to Stony Brook by scores of
5-3 and 8-0.
Mike
McGuire (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) (1-1) took
the loss for the Hens (5-6) in game one
allowing five hits and four earned runs in
five innings. Stony Brook's Jon Lewis
(2-0) recorded the win for the Seawolves
(4-4) by allowing three runs and striking
out nine in six innings on the
mound.
Stony
Brook was led in the opener by left
fielder Peter Milani who belted a
three-run homer in the fifth inning to
break a 2-2 tie and give the Seawolves the
lead for good. Delaware added a run in the
bottom half of the inning on a solo home
run by Dan Kozek, his second of the
season, but it wasn't enough.
In the
nightcap Stony Brook starter Kris Bakey
and relievers Robert Leonard and Tom
Koehler combined on a four-hit shutout to
complete the sweep over the Blue
Hens.
In the
first game the Hens made a come back in
the sixth inning as Chad Kerfoot (Owings
Mills, MD/Northern) caught three straight
Stony Brook batters looking, bringing
Delaware up in the bottom of the inning
with the score 5-3. Brock Donovan (New
Castle, DE/William Penn) reached on an
error and advanced to second when Dave
Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) walked.
Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana) shot
a grounder down the third base line and
beat out the throw to load the bases with
no outs. Delaware could not capitalize on
the opportunity however as the next two
batters struck out and Ryan Graham
(Danville, IL/Triton) grounded out to end
the inning
The Hens
were led offensively by Valichka who went
2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run
scored. Stony Brook was led by Andrew
Larsenand Matt Devins who each collected
two hits and an RBI.
Brent
Gaphardt (Bel Air, MD/Dundalk) (0-2) took
the loss in the second game, going five
innings and allowing six runs (four
earned) and five hits, while striking out
eight. Bakey (1-0) went 5.1 scoreless
innings while allowing two hits and
striking out four.
Delaware's
three hits came from Donovan, Graham, and
Adam Tsakonas (Pottstown, PA/Boyertown
Area).
Isidro
Fortuna led Stony Brook with three hits
including a double, two RBI, and a run
scored. Will Brumfield and Larsen each
added two hits and an RBI.
The
Seawolves pounded in two runs in the third
inning on a two out rally after Delaware
turned a double play. Devins walked and
scored when Fortuna doubled to center.
Fortuna also scored when Nick Theoharis
reached on an error by Donovan.
Delaware
will face Stony Brook on Sunday, March 13
at 12 noon at Hannah Stadium to complete
the three-game series.
