Valichka, Kozek Blast Three- Run Homers To Lead Delaware Past Temple 14-0

NEWARK, DE (May 8, 2005) -- Catcher Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana - right) and first baseman Dan Kozek (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) each blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Delaware baseball team past Temple 14-0 Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium

The last time the Blue Hens (22-25) posted a shutout victory was an 11-0 no-hitter thrown by Brent Gaphardt (Bel Air, MD/Dundalk) against Hofstra on March 26. Delaware is 2-0 against the Owls (11-31) this season after defeating them 13-11 in Ambler, PA on April 7.

With the win Delaware breaks a four-game losing streak which saw the Hens slide from third place to fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association standings.

Ryan Graham (Danville, IL/Triton) and Todd Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine) each laid out three hits. Davison doubled twice and drove in three runs while twice being hit by a pitch. Graham scored three runs and added a stolen base.

Brandon Menchaca (Wilmington, DE/Concord) and Dan Richardson (Bear, DE/Caravel) each doubled while Menchaca joined Valichka and Kozek by having two hits on the day.

Three Blue Hen pitchers combined for the shutout as Matt Heppner (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) came away with the win.Heppner struck out five and allowed two hits in three innings on the mound. Chad Kerfoot (Owings, MD/Northern) took over and allowed three hits in three innings and was followed by Kevin Brown (Wilmington, DE/McKean), who allowed one hit in three innings.

The Owls scattered six hits, all coming from different batters. Justin Cooper, Pete Colon, and Frank Nunan all doubled while Jason Conner, Matt Lafferty, and Tom Dolan chipped in with singles.

Chris Hamilton started the game and allowed nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits. He was replaced in the sixth by Tim Andrel, who allowed five runs on five hits, followed by Matt Lawless, who pitched one inning of scoreless relief in the ninth.

The Blue Hens crossed a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Graham led off with a single followed by Davison, who was hit by a pitch. They both advanced one base on a wild pitch and Graham scored when Kelly Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba CC) sent a sacrifice fly to left field.

Delaware increased its lead with three consecutive two run innings. In the second, Bryan Hagerich (Somerset, PA/Somerset) reached on a fielding error by the third baseman Dan Brady and scored when Menchaca doubled to left-center.

Finally, Menchaca scored from third on Davison's single. Two more runs came from a Richardson single in the bottom of the third and Davison doubled in Kozek and Graham who each singled in the fourth to make the score 7-0.

The Hens returned from a scoreless fifth inning to drop seven runs on the Owls in the sixth led by two three-run home runs to left field by Valichka and Kozek on Temple's Andrel.

Delaware travels to Rutgers on Wednesday for a single game slated for 3 p.m.
