Hens Open Weekend CAA Series vs. Towson
with 6-3 Victory
NEWARK,
DE (April 1, 2005) -- Bryan Hagerich
(Somerset, PA/Somerset) and Dan Richardson
(Bear, DE/Caravel) each hit RBI doubles in
the seventh inning and freshman Mike
McGuire (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) pitched
seven solid innings to pick up the victory
on the mound as the University of Delaware
baseball team opened its weekend
three-game set with Colonial Athletic
Association rival Towson with a 6-3 win
Friday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware
(11-13, 3-1 CAA) jumped out to a 4-0 lead
thanks to run-scoring hits by Adam
Tsakonas (Pottstown, PA/Boyertown Area) in
the first and third innings and Todd
Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine)
in the fourth before Towson rallied to cut
the lead to 4-3 in the seventh
inning.
Richardson
finished with three hits on the day while
McGuire struck out five Tiger batters in
seven innings to improve to 3-2. Jason
Rogers (New Castle, DE/William Penn)
pitched two scoreless innings to pick up
the save for the Hens his second of the
season.
Delaware
totaled 11 hits, five went for extra
bases, as four Hens had multiple hit games
and six Delaware batters tallied a hit on
the day.
Brian
Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana) stayed hot
for the Hens with two doubles and adding a
run scored while Hagerich finished out the
afternoon batting 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Despite his team leading 11 game hitting
streak coming to a close, Brandon Menchaca
(Wilmington, DE/Concord) added a run
scored on two walks.
Towson
was led by Casper Wells who's two run shot
to left field cut the Hens lead to 2-4 in
the top of the fifth as the left fielder
also chipped in a single. Adam Heffron and
Hans Falkenhan each punched in a pair of
singles and a run scored while Pat Fields,
Mark Chiccini, and Brian Conley all
singled to round out the Tigers' 10
hits.
Joe
Peeler (1-2) suffered the loss for Towson
allowing three runs on five hits and
striking out one in 2.1 innings of work.
He was replaced by Jason Summerlin who
allowed two runs on five hits while
striking out six before being replaced by
Steve Johnson in the seventh.
Delaware
and Towson will continue their three-game
set on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at Bob
Hannah Stadium
