GEORGETOWN,
DE -- The University of Delaware baseball
team swept a non-conference doubleheader
with the University of Massachusetts on
Saturday afternoon at Delaware Technical
Community College, 3-2 in game one and
13-3 in game two.
The
Blue Hens improve to .500 at 4-4 with the
pair of wins while UMass drops to 1-4. The
game was moved due to poor field
conditions at Bob Hannah
Stadium.
Delaware
won game one after three extra innings of
a seven inning contest. Adam Tsakonas
opened the10th with a double to left field
and advanced to third when Todd Davison
grounded out to first. Kelly Buber and
Brock Donovan were both intentionally
walked, bringing up an 0-for-4 Dave
Harden. Harden smacked a single to left
field to score Tsakonas and claim the
win.The Hens were led by Brock Donovan,
who batted 3-for-4 with a
double.
Mitch
Heckert (1-0) took the win for the Hens,
allowing three hits and striking out two
in three scoreless innings of relief. He
came into the game in the eightth frame,
replacing starting pitcher Mike McGuire
who allowed just three hits and two earned
runs in seven innings on the
mound.
Delaware
got on the board first in the bottom of
the fifth when Brian Valichka was hit by a
pitch, advanced to second on a Bryan
Hagerich single, and scored on a Dan Kozek
(at right) double. Hagerich also scored
when Ryan Graham grounded out two batters
later to give the Hens a 2-0 lead.
The
Minutemen responded in the top of the
sixth when Jason Twomley belted a two-run
shot over the left field wall to send the
game to extra innings.
The
bats came alive for Delaware in the second
game as the Hens scored nine times in the
first inning and banged out 16 hits
overall. Brandon Menchaca opened the game
with a lead-off home run to center field
and tripled later in the inning, thus
setting the tone for the Hens. Delaware
continued its offensive rampage in the
second inning as well, tallying three more
runs and four more hits to take an early
12-0 lead before UMass could find their
way onto the board in the top of the
third.
The
Hens were led by Todd Davison, who went
3-for-4 with a run scored, two doubles,
and an RBI while Kozek batted 2-for-4 with
two doubles, a run scored, and five RBI.
Buber belted his second home run of the
season during the contest while Menchaca
went 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple,
two runs scored, and two RBI.
Picking
up the win for Delaware was Jason Rogers
(1-1), who allowed one run and two hits
while striking out five in five innings of
work. Taking the loss for the Minutemen
was Keith Doherty (0-2), who allowed seven
runs and six hits in a third of an
inning.
The
Blue Hens will conclude the three-game set
with Massachusetts Sunday beginning at 12
noon once again at Delaware Technical
Community College in Georgetown,
DE.
